MCE Announces 2022 Open Season Request for Power Supply

California Wind and Geothermal Resources Prioritized

MCE’s 2022 Open Season procurement will accept offers between April 15 and May 16, 2022, providing a competitive opportunity for qualified energy suppliers to fulfill MCE’s resource requirements. Energy suppliers are encouraged to submit proposals for new or existing wind and geothermal resources that will help MCE meet its 2029 85% renewable target. MCE’s Open Season solicitation also prefers offers that include project elements that benefit adjacent communities, support local workforce development and supply chains, and encourage the utilization of diverse contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.

“MCE prioritizes suppliers who offer community benefits as part of their Open Season submissions,” said Tom Butt, MCE Board Chair and Mayor of Richmond. “Our Golden Fields Solar project includes a community benefit of $100,000 for local reinvestment to support family-sustaining green collar jobs. We hope our 2022 Open Season will see similar equity offerings.”

The addition of new wind and geothermal energy resources to MCE’s existing portfolio will help MCE reduce the need for polluting fossil-fuel resources in the evening peak hours of 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Wind and geothermal resources will also provide generation during the early morning and late evening hours when solar resources are not generating. The following energy procurement products will be included in this solicitation:

Portfolio Content Category One (PCC1) Renewable Energy from wind and geothermal projects (Note: MCE will consider new, repowered, or existing projects)
Firm block of clean energy (Note: PCC1 or carbon-free energy can come from a single resource or a portfolio of resources, but cannot include energy discharged between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.)

All offers will be due on Monday, May 16, 2022 by 11:59 p.m., Pacific Standard Time. Instructions and documents for the 2022 Open Season Request for Offers will be available on MCE’s website at www.mceCleanEnergy.org/energy-procurement.
